In the chaotic times of the "cold war" our nations' security services had a desperate need for intelligence on the activities of the "enemy."  This intelligence requirement placed emphasis on newer and better methods of intelligence collection and analysis and was the driving force behind the operation of special collection and analysis teams.

This heightened emphasis on intelligence teams reached new levels in the 1960's and 1970's primarily to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam.  Establishment of intelligence detachments proliferated and dedicated young men and women were called upon to man them.

One such team was operated under the auspices of Naval Squadron VQ-1, based at Atsugi Naval Air Station, Japan.  This team was chartered to perform aerial surveillance and intelligence gathering missions in otherwise difficult or impossible to reach locations.  This team was called "Special Activities Detachment One"... SAD-1. Over time many soldiers made their individual contribution to our nations' security here. In the mid and late nineteen sixties a small group of soldiers made their own personal contributions. They have reunited again in the beginning of the twenty-first century.... some thirty-five years after the event, and this is their story.

This Web Page is not intended to tell the entire story of SAD-1. Rather, it addresses only a small segment of the story reflecting a slice in time in the unit's history.
We do not intentionally ignore the contributions of our predecessors and successors. We simply focus on what "we" did!
